2012 is going to be a year of great expansion at Nedd Health Center! This includes the addition of new health professionals, services, products, and specials. We also plan to have more flexible hours as we look to eventually be open from Monday-Saturday!

Get in Shape to Start the New Year with Specials on Fat-Reducing Procedures

During the month of January we will be having a special on our two fat-reduction procedures. Our unique non-invasive FDA approved body contouring procedure using the Zerona® laser is now available during the month of January for the special price of $1,495, which is a $500 savings off our already discounted fee. The procedure includes 6 laser treatments, 6 infrared sauna treatments, a pre-program detoxification cleanse, nutritional supplements that support the body’s elimination of fat, and 3 body composition analyses (before, during, after). For more information on this incredible technology, visit our website at www.neddhealthcenter.com and click on the left side of the front page where it says “Zerona Laser Program.” Also, contact our office for a free consultation to have all of your questions answered and to see if you are medically qualified to receive this procedure.

We have also discounted our HCG diet program during the month of January. The short program (26 days) has been discounted from $255 down to $200 and the long program (43 days) has been discounted from $324 down to $250! If you do it along with the Zerona Laser Program then it is only an additional $150 for the short program and $200 for the long program!

Attend Dr. Nedd’s Lecture at Nature’s Food Patch

On Thursday January 5th at 6:30 PM at Nature’s Food Patch, Dr. Nedd will be speaking about “Optimizing Your Athletic Performance.” What better way to start the year off by getting some helpful information to maximize your athletic potential whether you are an average individual that just wants to be in shape or an elite athlete looking for an edge.

Dr. Nedd will cover a range of topics with lots of take-home value including proper footwear, water intake, stretching, diet, and the importance of working with a qualified and well-trained health professional. We hope to see you there with lots of family and friends!

New Posture Correction Shirts

One of the benefits of the advanced Sports Medicine training that Dr. Nedd has been undergoing (see section entitled Advanced Sports Medicine…) is exposure to new cutting edge technologies. One of which is the IntelliSkin PostureCue™ products. This is a posture workout that you wear in the form of a shirt! It engages your underused posture muscles from the moment you put it on. Depending on your level of posture fitness, wear it 30-60 minutes* in the beginning and increase the time increments as you become more comfortable.

Most of the people that Dr. Nedd examines have postural problems including rounded shoulders, hands turned inward (your thumbs should be pointing forward and hands at your sides when you are standing), and head jutted and tilted forward (your ear holes should line up with the center of your shoulders on side profile) due to tight chest muscles from typing, driving, reading, and many other activities that involve using your arms in front of you. You can successfully improve your posture by wearing this shirt in addition to doing assigned posture-specific exercises and stretches from Dr. Nedd, and making any recommended changes to your workstation, your seated posture, and your sleeping posture.

BENEFITS OF WEARING IntelliSkin PostureCue™ PRODUCTS:

Instantly feel taller, leaner, and stronger

Improved spinal alignment and posture

Increased mobility, stability, muscular balance, and stability

Better respiration, increased circulation and oxygen flow to the brain and muscles increasing endurance and reducing fatigue

Quicker recovery from training, competition, injury and even traveling

Supports and enhances the rehabilitation process when treating injuries (wearing IntelliSkin after treatment can extend the benefits of that treatment)

Improved movement patterns through proper alignment and posture

Reduces the risk of injury associated with poor posture and repetitive movement patterns

1-2. Perfectly positioned posture panels open, stretch and relax overused and under stretched chest muscles while stimulating muscles of the upper back to roll the shoulders down and back into a structurally and functionally correct posture position.

3. Vertical posture panel stimulates the muscles that keep the spine lengthened and upright with the head directly aligned over the shoulders while the shoulder blades are supported in their optimal position.

4. Longer shirt design for lower back and core compression functionally integrating the abdominals, hips, and gluts to the upper body for increased support and body alignment.

5. IntelliSkin technical fabric conforms to the core like an intelligent second skin allowing for maximum freedom of movement while enhancing muscular support.

Come in and have Dr. Nedd do a thorough postural analysis if you haven’t received one yet. Also, check out our display of Intelliskin® shirts including standard shirts, tank tops, and sports bras, and inquire how to get them to enhance your posture.

Advanced Sports Medicine Training for Dr. Nedd

Starting in April of 2011, Dr. Nedd began training to become a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (DACBSP®). This intensive training takes approximately 2 years and includes eight weekend on-site seminars in Port Orange, Florida at Palmer College of Chiropractic, several hundred hours of online study, at least one hundred hours of on-field or apprentice sports training, a written requirement (case study, literature review, or research project), a written exam, a practical exam, maintenance of CPR certification, and completion of a minimum of 24 hours of annual continuing education units (CEUs).

In addition, the DACBSP certification requires the completion of the Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP®) program which Dr. Nedd began in October of 2011 and includes five weekend on-site seminars in Raleigh, North Carolina as well as intensive online study, annual CEUs, and a written examination which Dr. Nedd will be taking in Portland, Oregon in April 2012 at the Annual Chiropractic Sports Sciences Symposium. Dr. Nedd plans on taking his written and practical examinations for his DACBSP and present his case study at the 2013 Annual Chiropractic Sports Sciences Symposium at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

What does all this mean in terms of technical expertise? The answer to this question is that there are less than 300 chiropractor who have attained the status of DACBSP. Dr. Nedd will be in an elite category of doctors who are worthy of being qualified to work as Olympic doctors or professional sports team physicians! Dr. Nedd as worked with elite athletes his entire career and wants to be able to offer the absolute highest quality of care for them as well as his regular patients. By the way, the Director of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians, William Moreau, DC, DACBSP®, is also the Director of Sports Medicine Clinics for the United States Olympic Committee. He is the first chiropractor in any country to achieve this lofty status. The Medical Director, Sports Performance Division, of the United States Olympic Committee, Michael Reed, DC, DACBSP®, is also the first chiropractor to attain this incredible honor!

The last newsletter covered dietary recommendations for inflammation. This issue covers popular anti-inflammatory medications and their harmful side effects, as well as alternative natural anti-inflammatory supplements. I strongly recommend that you do not take this subject lightly especially since many of these medications are generally classified as “safe” and often taken like candy.

Before we delve into this topic, I want to clarify something about inflammation. Inflammation is actually the body’s normal response to an injury or other harmful triggers including infections and toxins. It is not due to a deficiency of anti-inflammatory medications! These medications can give temporary symptom relief, but they do not address the cause(s) of inflammation and long-term use of them actually inhibits healing. Nutritional support can help the body handle the cause(s) of inflammation and assist it in healing.

NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are the most commonly used and prescribed anti-inflammatory medications. The most popular over-the-counter (OTC) NSAIDS are aspirin and ibuprofen. They are generally safer than prescribed NSAIDS and steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, but they still have the potential for significant side effects.

Aspirin has other benefits as an analgesic (pain-killer) and blood thinner. Some studies have shown that it can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, but so can many wholesome foods and nutritional supplements. Other studies have shown that it can potentially prevent and slow down the progression of certain types of cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. The problem is that many people take aspirin blindly as if their life depended on it without even looking at clinically proven natural remedies that can do the same things. It’s questionable whether aspirin’s risks outweigh its rewards due to it’s many documented side effects including:

Bleeding and ulcers of the stomach, intestines, esophagus

Increased bruising

Dizziness

Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

Reye’s Syndrome – increased risk when given to children under 18 and especially after receiving varicella and MMR vaccines or while fighting a virus. It is a rare and potentially fatal disease that strikes quickly primarily affecting the brain and liver.

Ibuprofen, also known as Advil and Motrin, is also used as a painkiller and is effective for lowering high fevers (anti-pyretic). Of all the anti-inflammatory medications, ibuprofen has the lowest incidence of stomach and intestine complications such as bleeding and ulcers, but this is only true when it is taken in low dosages and like all other NSAIDS it should not be taken with alcohol. Common side effects include nausea, raised liver enzymes, constipation, diarrhea, headaches, and dizziness. Long term usage of ibuprofen has been linked to an increased risk for heart attacks and erectile dysfunction in males. A study published by the Canadian Medical Journal showed that pregnant women taking NSAIDS including ibuprofen were 2.4 times more likely to have a miscarriage.

Tylenol is not an anti-inflammatory medication, but is instead effective for relieving pain and lowering high fevers. I have included it here to give you some vital information on “the pain reliever hospitals use most” because it is far from the safest OTC painkiller that it is perceived to be. In fact, many experts agree that it is the most dangerous OTC in the U.S. The reason for that is that it is not only the No. 1 cause of acute liver failure in the U.S., but is also the No. 1 cause of pharmaceutical drug deaths. If you decide to use it, always make sure you take it with food and do not take it with alcohol because these combinations have been proven to significantly increase your risk of liver complications and/or overdose toxicity. You can read more about this at http://abcnews.go.com/Health/PainManagement/story?id=2739177&page=1.

The most commonly prescribed steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are cortisone and prednisone. They are synthetic versions of adrenal gland hormones called corticosteroids. Cortisone is typically injected into an inflamed joint to reduce inflammation quickly and can last up to a few weeks. It is very close to the natural adrenal hormone called cortisol, but it is more powerful and longer lasting than cortisol since it stays in the body for days instead of minutes. Common complications from cortisone shots include death of nearby bone (osteonecrosis), thinning of nearby bone (osteoporosis), joint infection, nerve damage, temporary flare of pain and inflammation in the joint, skin and soft tissue thinning around injection site, and whitening or lightening of the skin around injection site. Repeated injections can cause deterioration of the cartilage as well as tendon weakening or rupture. Therefore, it is advisable to limit cortisone injections or find other alternatives that have limited or no side effects.

Prednisone is typically taken orally in pill form and has a more whole-body effect. Side effects from prednisone include increased blood sugar (especially in diabetics), fluid retention, insomnia, and reduced immune function. Long-term usage can lead to osteoporosis, glaucoma, cataracts, and depression. If taken for more than seven days, it will suppress the adrenal glands’ ability to produce corticosteroids. Therefore, in order to prevent complete dependence on this drug it must not be abruptly stopped, but rather gradually reduced over days or possibly weeks.

The best documented natural anti-inflammatory supplements available are fish oil, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, systemic enzymes and Vitamin C. Fish oil, in particular the omega-3 fatty acids called EPA and DHA, is not only a terrific anti-inflammatory, but it also has heart-healthy benefits including lowering triglycerides and raising good cholesterol levels, lowering high blood pressure, reducing plaque build-up inside arteries, and lubricating blood cells to prevent blood clots making it a great alternative blood thinner to aspirin. It is also a good hormone precursor, protects your skin from the sun’s damaging rays, has anti-aging properties, helps prevent Alzheimer’s Disease, and improves vision while helping combat eye conditions like macular degeneration. In order to get an anti-inflammatory effect from fish oil, it is recommended that you take 3,000-5,000 mg of it daily.

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are excellent for joint inflammation since they can help regenerate cartilage. In addition, the sulfur (sulfate) molecule is needed to help the liver detoxify chemicals. In fact, often times joint degeneration is caused by an excess of toxins in the body where the liver has to steal sulfur from the cartilage to handle them. Doing regular liver cleanses and supplementing with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate can essentially kill two birds with one stone!

Systemic enzymes, also known as proteolytic enzymes, are believed to be by many experts the strongest natural anti-inflammatory supplements available. I have been using and recommending these for many years and have seen incredible results. The most popular systemic enzymes on the market are called Wobenzym, which comes from Germany and works very well. We carry an alternative supplement called Lyso-Lyph-Forte that is essentially identical and less expensive. I especially like recommending these with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to shrink and strengthen bulging and herniated spinal discs. Just remember to always take them on an empty stomach (one hour before eating and at least two hours after eating) because if taken with food they will work as digestive enzymes instead!

We all know that Vitamin C is excellent for the immune system as it helps fight colds. It is also an excellent anti-inflammatory supplement especially since it reduces a by-product of inflammation called histamine, which is also responsible for the symptoms of allergies. Your body does not make Vitamin C so it should be supplemented regularly. Taking 3,000-5,000 mg of Vitamin C daily is recommended when fighting inflammation. If you develop diarrhea, then simply lower the amount until your stools normalize. Vitamin C as well as zinc are also important for ligament repair and should be taken together after a sprained joint or a surgical joint repair.

The most important natural “supplement” that you can take to reduce inflammation in the body is water! Dehydration is a major cause of inflammation. When the radiator of your car is low in water it will overheat – the same goes for your body and it is called inflammation. The body is 70% water and the brain is 80% water. Take your body weight and multiply it X .55 and you will have the approximately amount of daily ounces of water you should drink.

If you have a condition that includes inflammation and have gotten into the vicious cycle of taking anti-inflammatory medications, then come in and let me help you address the cause(s) of your condition and utilize healthier solutions.

In the 3 previous newsletters we covered what cholesterol is, the most commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), side effects from taking cholesterol-lowering drugs, and the fact that low cholesterol levels can actually be more dangerous than high cholesterol levels. It is now time to look at proven natural therapies that can assist in optimizing cholesterol levels and preventing heart disease.

Following a combined natural strategy to promote healthy blood cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease is the best approach. Studies have shown the following beneficial effects of specific lifestyle changes:

Exercise – approximately 5-10% reduction in blood cholesterol

Avoid smoking – quitting smoking will lower the bad (LDL) cholesterol and raise the good (HDL) cholesterol

Reduction of saturated fats and trans-fatty acids intake in diet – approximately 15% reduction in total blood cholesterol with lowering of LDL and triglycerides

Increasing fruits and vegetables – approximately 10% cholesterol reduction with beneficial antioxidant benefits

Moderate alcohol intake – new studies show benefits on HDL and lowering of total blood cholesterol

Dietary supplements for cholesterol control including oat bran, beta glucans, phytosterol complexes from soy, policosanol, fish oil, garlic, and niacin – reduction in total blood cholesterol of up to 20% plus

Reducing blood homocysteine levels – using vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, and trimethylglycine

Let’s now focus on nutrition. It’s already common knowledge that foods high in saturated fat and trans-fatty acids can elevate cholesterol levels. But did you know that foods containing high concentrations of the amino acid histidine, specifically grain products (breads, cakes, and pastas) and all dairy products (even the low-fat types), can cause elevated cholesterol levels? Therefore, if you are going to eat grains and dairy, you need to balance them with meats (lean beef, chicken, pork, turkey, and even eggs) as well as fruits and vegetables. The amino acids glycine and taurine, on the other hand, are beneficial since they help to break down cholesterol and speed its removal through the digestive tract. Fruits just happen to have a very high concentration of glycine!

Garlic has been proven in many clinical studies to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, raise good (HDL) cholesterol, and lower triglycerides. Other foods that have beneficial cholesterol-lowering effects include green leafy vegetables, avocados, almonds, walnuts, olive oil, soy beans, shiitake mushrooms, chili peppers, beans (kidney, pintos, black, navy, etc.), onions, fatty fish, and flax seed.

Niacin is found in red meat, chicken, turkey, beans, and grains. It is less expensive, much safer, and more effective at improving cholesterol levels than any statin drug! It works by breaking down cholesterol in the bloodstream and converting it to hormone compounds like estrogen and Cortisol. It has been shown to decrease bad (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides while at the same time increasing good (HDL) cholesterol. A study published in the Journal of American Cardiology in December of 1986 showed that it reduced the incidence of recurrent, nonfatal heart attacks by 27% and the number of strokes by 26%. All forms of niacin are effective except the “no-flush” forms.

According to Guyton’s Textbook of Medical Physiology, cholesterol metabolism is regulated by essential fatty acids. The most effective oils that we recommend are EPA/DHA from fatty fish. It’s crucial that the fish oil is “purity certified” to ensure that it does not contain mercury, pesticides, or other industrial chemicals. Fish oil has been shown to lower elevated bad (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides, prevent blood clots, slow plaque growth, prevent sudden cardiac death, and normalize heart arrhythmias.

Another supplement rich in essential fatty acids called krill oil has shown promising cholesterol-lowering benefits in recent studies, too. Krill are shrimp-like crustaceans that live in the ocean. Not only does krill oil contain omega-3 fatty acids, but it also contains an antioxidant that is unique because it crosses the blood-brain barrier where it can theoretically protect the eye, brain and central nervous system from free radical damage.

My all-time favorite cholesterol-balancing supplement is Choles-PlusT by Suncoast BioResearch Co. It contains an excellent blend of natural ingredients that have all been found in medical studies to lower bad (LDL) cholesterol and increase good (HDL) cholesterol. These ingredients have also been shown to inhibit blood clotting, reduce triglyceride levels, and slow down the production of cholesterol in the liver. It specifically contains a safe form of red yeast rice called Hong-Qu, guggulipid extract, inositol hexaniacinate, policosinol, phytosterol complex, and CoQ10. This product is available at our office.

I would like to wrap up this series on cholesterol by refreshing your memory about my own personal experience from the first newsletter of this series. I shared with you the details of how my total cholesterol level, which was normally around 160, was elevated to 231 and my cortisol levels were also out-of-range due to accumulated stress. Would you like to know how I got them balanced quickly? I simply added an excellent EPA/DHA fish oil supplement along with anti-stress and adrenal gland support herbs called adaptogens. In just one week, my cholesterol dropped from 231 to 193 and my circulation and energy levels were significantly better!

If you missed any of the previous newsletters in this series, you can find them in the Newsletter Library on our website at www.neddhealthcenter.com. I hope you found this information to be enlightening and will use it to improve your health as well as others that you know. If you have a current cardiovascular or cholesterol-related health concern or know someone that does and would like some nutritional assistance, then contact my office and we’ll be happy to help!

Have you been diagnosed with arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, plantar fasciitis, pancreatitis, gastritis, colitis, or fibromyalgia? All of these conditions are the result of too much inflammation in various parts of the body. This newsletter will go over dietary factors involved with inflammation and a corrective diet that has been proven to reduce inflammation.

Here is a list of some of the common signs and symptoms of inflammation:

Chronic aches and pains (back pain, neck pain, headaches, or general muscle and/or joint soreness)

Being overweight

Being able to grab too much fat around the waist

Not exercising regularly

Not feeling well when exercising

Having difficulty recovering from moderate to light exercise

Feeling physically lethargic

Feeling mentally lethargic as well as rundown and depressed often

Looking old and/or feeling old for your age

Having old and sagging skin

Suffering from one or more of the following: frequent cold symptoms, frequent flu symptoms, frequent allergies, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, sinusitis, acne, asthma, digestive disorders, abnormal periods, endometriosis, Alzheimmer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, hypertension, depression, insulin resistance syndrome (pre-diabetes), or diabetes.

Here is a list of foods that create inflammation (pro-inflammatory) in the body:

All grains and grain products (White bread, whole wheat bread, pasta, cereal, pretzels, crackers and any other product made with grains or flours from grains including most desserts and packaged foods)

Partially hydrogenated oils aka trans fats (Margarine, deep fried foods like French fries, and most packaged foods)

Seed and legume oils (Corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, peanut oil, soybean oil and foods made with these oils including mayonnaise, tartar sauce, margarine, salad dressings and many packaged foods)

Soft drinks and sugar

Dairy and soy (when consumed heavily)

Meat and eggs from grain-fed animals

Perhaps the most shocking food on the list is grains especially since it was at the base of the highly touted USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) “Food Pyramid” from 1992 –2005 and finally changed this year to a lower recommended percentage, but still one of the highest recommended foods along with vegetables. Grains are inexpensive and contain nutrients and fiber which are healthy, but we can obtain those nutrients and fiber from eating healthy meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts and nutritional supplements. Unfortunately, grains have a dark side that far outweighs these benefits.

Grains have only been consumed for a relatively short period (10,000 years) of man’s existence. After they grew in popularity and became more of a staple food than animal proteins for a large percentage of the earth’s population, the following negative health outcomes occurred: increased infant mortality rate, reduced lifespan, increases in infectious diseases, increase in iron deficiency anemia, increased number of dental cavities and enamel defects, increased osteoporosis and osteomalacia (bone softening) and other bone mineral disorders.

There are 5 valid reason to avoid grains:

1. Gluten—this is the most notorious inflammatory component of grains and is found in wheat, rye, barley, barley malt, semolina, spelt, kamut, and couscous. Severe allergy or sensitivity to this protein can result in a disabling digestive disease called Celiac. Other less severe, but more common conditions that gluten can cause or contribute to include headaches, chronic fatigue, and various digestive complaints. The “gluten-free” craze is now very popular and many restaurants have “gluten-free” menu items.

2. Lectins—these are sugar proteins found in all grains and legumes (beans, lentils, soy, peanuts) and can cause inflammation in the digestive system. They have been found to cause a number of diseases including arthritis, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, cataracts, infertility, allergies, and autoimmune problems. Certain blood types are especially sensitive to grain lectins including O and A.

3. Phytic acid—this is found in grains and reduces the absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.

4. Acid pH—grains cause an overall lowering of the body’s pH making it more acidic which promotes inflammation.

5. Omega-6 fatty acids—these are found in high amounts in grains and they cause inflammation as opposed to omega-3 fatty acids which are anti-inflammatory and found in fish and green vegetables and can be taken as supplements.

Now that we have seen which foods create inflammation, let’s look at the foods which are anti-inflammatory:

All fruits and vegetables (raw or lightly cooked) – limit fruits very high in naturally-occurring sugar including bananas, pineapples, mangoes, and papayas

Red and sweet potatoes

Fresh fish (avoid farm-raised tilapia, catfish, basa and bronzini as they have elevated levels of pro-inflammatory omega-6 oils)

Meat, chicken, and turkey from grass-fed animals (keep them lean and preferably organic)

Wild game including deer, elk, etc.

Omega-3 eggs (found in health food stores and some regular grocery stores)

Raw nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios, Brazil nuts, and macadamia nuts)

Spices (ginger, turmeric, garlic, dill, oregano, coriander, fennel, red chili pepper, basil, rosemary, and Himalayan salt)

Oils & fats (organic butter, coconut oil, uncooked extra virgin olive oil, and avocados)

Salad dressing (blend extra virgin oil, balsamic vinegar or lemon juice, mustard, along with any of the above spices)

Beverages (water, organic green tea, red wine, stout beer, gluten-free beer)

It is not a coincidence that many of the currently popular and effective diets recommend eliminating the pro-inflammatory foods and focus on consuming the anti-inflammatory foods. These diets include the Paleo diet, gluten-free diet, and HCG diet.

The most common anti-inflammatory medications are over-the-counter NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), prescription NSAIDS, and prescription steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. All of these medications have side effects and it is not a good idea to take them long-term because of the damage they can do to your body as well as the fact that some of them can become very addictive and extremely difficult to stop. The next issue will cover the harmful effects of these medications in detail and give effective alternative natural anti-inflammatory remedies.

In addition to monitoring your diet to control inflammation, low-impact exercise is also incredibly beneficial. How many times have you woken up in the morning feeling stiff and sore and then once you got up and moved around for a while or went for a walk or went swimming and you felt much better? Our bodies are meant to be moved and when joints are constricted or fixated, too much friction can occur resulting in inflammation. That is also why chiropractic adjustments are also helpful since they help reduce fixated joints and improve motion as well as improving nerve flow and reducing muscle tension. Cold laser therapy is also incredibly effective for reducing inflammation, especially the unit that I use at my office because it can be programmed specifically for treating inflammation!

Just because your doctor has diagnosed you with an inflammatory condition like arthritis doesn’t mean that you just “have to live with it” and that you will have it the rest of your life. If you suffer from any of the signs and symptoms listed at the beginning of this newsletter, then I recommend that you come in for an evaluation so that we can troubleshoot your condition. By following these recommendations plus those in the upcoming newsletter, you and I can break the vicious cycle of inflammation and I look forward to helping you!

When was the last time that you had a therapeutic massage? Last week? Last month? Last year? Never? Massage has too often been depicted as a luxury item. It is anything but that as you will see in this newsletter.

In these times of economic stress we should all be doing cost-effective stress reduction techniques including regular exercise, healthy eating, drinking plenty of water, fun hobbies, getting plenty of rest, taking walks, stretching, and keeping our bodies in optimum balance through chiropractic adjustments and other physical medicine techniques including therapeutic massage. Therapeutic massage is incredible for stress reduction, but it also has many other health benefits backed up by excellent scientific research.

Massage therapy is one of the oldest and simplest forms of medicine dating back to 2,700 B.C. in Chinese medical literature. Even Hippocrates, known as the “Father of Medicine,” said “the physician must be experienced in many things, but most assuredly in rubbing…for rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose, and loosen a joint that is too rigid.”

Here are the results of some medical studies showing measurable benefits of therapeutic massage:

Medical school students at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School who received massage therapy before an exam showed a significant decrease in anxiety and respiratory rates, as well as a significant increase in white blood cells and natural killer cell activity, suggesting a benefit to the immune system.

Preliminary results suggested cancer patients had less pain and anxiety after receiving therapeutic massage at the James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Columbus, Ohio.

Women who had experienced the recent death of a child were less depressed after receiving therapeutic massage, according to preliminary results of a study at the University of South Carolina.

Studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have found massage beneficial in improving weight gain in HIV-exposed infants and facilitating recovery in patients who underwent abdominal surgery.

At the University of Miami School of Medicine’s Touch Research Institute, researchers have found that massage is helpful in decreasing blood pressure in people with hypertension, alleviating pain in migraine sufferers and improving alertness and performance in office workers.

An increasing number of research studies show massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins (enhancing medical treatment).

Although therapeutic massage does not increase muscle strength, massage can stimulate weak, inactive muscles and, thus, partially compensate for the lack of exercise and inactivity resulting from illness or injury. Massage can hasten and lead to a more complete recovery from exercise or injury.

Many of those medical studies were done on special populations, but the benefits of massage translate to everybody. They include, but are not limited to the following:

* Massage increases circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs

* Massage relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication

* Massage promotes deeper sleep

* Alleviates low-back pain and improves range of motion

* Assists with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shortens maternity hospital stays

* Eases medication dependence

* Enhances immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body’s natural defense system

* Exercises and stretches weak, tight, or atrophied muscles

* Helps athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts

* Improves the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin

* Increases joint flexibility

* Lessens depression and anxiety

* Promotes tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks

* Pumps oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation

* Reduces post-surgery adhesions and swelling

* Reduces spasms and cramping

* Relaxes and softens injured, tired, and overused muscles

* Releases endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkillers

Why should everyone get massages on a regular basis? Your body is not like a machine that just needs its screws tightened or a little bit of oil to lubricate a creaky joint. Instead, our bodies are dynamic and flexible because of soft tissues like muscles, fat, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Soft tissues can get knotted up and strained plus they can accumulate harsh chemicals like lactic acid and environmental toxins which can create soreness, tightness, and even conditions including fibromyalgia. Drinking water, stretching, and taking Epsom salt baths are helpful, but usually not enough to totally relieve these problems. Add in therapeutic massage and you have a winning formula.

Just like other healthy habits such as exercise and diet, you get the maximum benefits when you get massages on a consistent basis. It’s customary to start out getting weekly massages and then once you have attained satisfactory functional improvement in whatever areas you are aiming to handle, then maintaining that desired state by receiving monthly massages is usually recommended.

Our therapist, Elizabeth Beiro, LMT, has 15 years of experience and is expertly trained and certified in many techniques ranging from light relaxation massage to deep tissue massage. She recently became certified in Thai Massage which is a unique blend of incorporating yoga stretches with traditional massage to significantly improve flexibility by focusing on improving range of motion and reducing muscle tension at the same time. Give us a call if you or someone you know is interested in receiving therapeutic massage and we will be happy to accommodate you as soon as possible.

How Cold Laser Therapy Complements Chiropractic

Many patients have asked me, “How does the cold laser work?” and “What does it help?” Those questions were basically answered in the newsletter of January/February 2009 titled “Cold Laser Therapy,” which can be found in the Newsletters section of our website. This issue will explain how cold laser therapy assists chiropractic adjustments.

When I examine a new patient that comes in with low back pain, for example, I not only look at their posture, feel for tight muscles and painful areas, and observe how well they can bend, but I also test specific muscles responsible for normal movement and stabilization of the back and hips. Quite often muscles are tight because they are compensating for muscles that are weak. Therefore, finding and strengthening weak muscles will often result in tight muscles relaxing.

For example, a patient comes in and is bent to the right and slightly forward. Upon inspection via specific muscle testing, the muscles on the left side of the back and between the rib cage and waist are found to be weak allowing the body to be pulled the opposite way. Before doing a chiropractic adjustment, I recommend that we use the cold laser to help strengthen these muscles.

How exactly can the laser help strengthen the muscles? This is accomplished by improving nerve flow. OK, but what do your nerves have to do with muscle strength? The answer to that is everything! Your nerves are the communication and power lines to all of your body parts. They are just like wires in an electrical device because electrical impulses, similar to electricity in a wire, flow through them. As long as there is no interference, the nerves work well and whatever they attach to works well, too. Anything that interferes with nerve flow in the body results in a loss of body function and that can include muscle strength.

You might now be thinking, “Isn’t improving nerve flow what a chiropractic adjustment does?” Yes, but in a slightly different way than what the laser does. Think of it like this – you are watering your plants with a hose and notice that the stream of water is weak and it is just coming out as drops of water. You turn around and notice that there is a kink in the hose which is obstructing the flow. You unbend it and then it flows normally. That is similar to having a pinched spinal nerve due to a misaligned vertebra. When the vertebra is adjusted back into its proper alignment, the space opens up for the nerve and it can work properly again since it is not compressed anymore.

Now let’s go back to the garden hose analogy and see how that relates to the cold laser. You are watering your plants and the water is coming out one drop at a time. The first thing that you would do is check to see if the faucet needs to be turned up. By doing that you are obviously increasing the flow of water directly. Another example is trying to read a book, but the light is too dim so you simply increase the flow of light by adjusting the dimmer switch. Well, that’s precisely what we’re able to accomplish with the cold laser. We identify a weak muscle through testing, then stimulate the nerve(s) responsible for that muscle with the cold laser for a few seconds, and it immediately increases the energy flowing through the nerve resulting in a stronger muscle.

So how does the cold laser assist a chiropractic adjustment? By strengthening the muscles that support the spine and surrounding areas, I find that patients hold their chiropractic adjustments better. The cold laser can also be used on the spine or related areas to reduce pain and inflammation, speed up the recovery time from injuries, and reduce the formation of scar tissue.

In addition to cold laser therapy and chiropractic adjustments, patients may also be assigned exercises that focus on the specific muscles that were found to be weak. Also, since your muscles are primarily made out of protein and water, it’s very important to make sure that you are drinking enough water and not only eating enough protein, but also effectively digesting it. You may need to supplement with digestive enzymes in order to ensure that you are assimilating protein optimally. Nerve flow is also dependent on proper mineral intake and since we live in sunny Florida, it’s important to regularly supplement with the electrolytes magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium. Instead of the popular electrolyte drinks Gatorade and Powerade, which also happen to have sugar or artificial sweeteners plus table salt, I recommend the powdered electrolyte drinks called Emergen-C and Electro Mix.

I have trained with some outstanding doctors that teach cold laser therapy including Dr. Jeffrey Spencer, who was Lance Armstrong’s personal chiropractor during all seven of his Tour de France victories. Dr. Spencer was also a member of the 1972 United States Olympic Cycling Team. I use his Erchonia laser protocol daily in my practice. If it’s good enough for Lance, then it’s definitely good enough for my patients, too!

The bottom line is that cold laser therapy is a very effective technology that can help many health conditions. If you haven’t experienced it, you should come in and witness for yourself its incredible benefits. It is very cost effective at just $25 per treatment, usually only takes a few minutes, and is completely safe and painless! I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have concerning cold laser therapy. I look forward to helping you out.

The cause of a health problem can often be hidden, requiring some detective work and persistence on the part of your doctor to find it.

communication system – the nervous system. This interference is known as a spinal misalignment or “subluxation”.

The last issue went over the HCG approach which is a highly effective short-term fat loss approach. This issue covers a long-term healthy diet approach which can produce fat loss on a more gradual basis. This approach combines 2 different diets—the Paleo Diet and the Blood Type Diet.

I have researched many dietary approaches over the last 20+ years including but not limited to the Food Pyramid, Vegetarian, Atkins, Zone, Weight Watchers, and Metabolic Typing. They all have some workable truths to them, but I have found them all to be lacking in producing long-term health for everyone. I have yet to find one specific diet that works for everyone. There are a number of factors that most diets don’t take into account such as one’s native background, blood type, and individual food allergies and sensitivities. Instead of going into detail about all of these factors I have decided to simplify things and discuss 2 dietary approaches that work very well for nearly everyone when combined.

The first approach is what I would consider the foundation diet. The Paleo Diet, written by Loren Cordain, Ph.D., is an outstanding reference book for this approach. It is based on sound nutritional principles dating back to the Paleolithic period, also known as the Old Stone Age, which occurred approximately 2.5 million years ago until approximately 10,000 years ago. The Agricultural Revolution then began and our original diet changed. According to historical and anthropological records, our Paleolithic ancestors were lean, fit and free from heart disease and other conditions that plague modern man. Up until 10,000 years ago, the people on Earth were known as “hunter-gatherers” since they survived by hunting wild animals and fish and gathering wild fruits and vegetables. It’s no wonder that we have so many health problems today since the basic elements of our modern diet include cereals, dairy products, refined sugars, fatty meats, and salted, processed foods.

Here are the basics of the Paleo Diet:

1. All the lean meats, fish, and seafood you can eat

2. All the fruits and nonstarchy vegetables you can eat

3. No cereals, grains, and rice

4. No legumes (beans, peas, peanuts)

5. No dairy products

6. No processed foods

In summary, the Paleo Diet is not a low-fat or low-carb diet, but rather a high-lean protein, moderate-carb, moderate-to-high healthy fat, and high-fiber diet. It is an excellent foundation for any long-term approach to healthy eating and weight loss.

If no changes in man had occurred since the Paleolithic period, then the Paleo Diet by itself would be workable for everyone. However, something notable has changed and that is the evolution of different blood types. The original Blood Type of man was O and it is still the predominant blood type even today. People with Blood Type O thrive on the “hunter-gatherer” dietary approach and that includes the Paleo Diet by itself.

Type A blood initially appeared somewhere in Asia or the Middle East between 25,000 and 15,000 B.C. and became prominent approximately 10,000 years ago, which also marked the end of the Paleolithic period and the beginning of the Agricultural Revolution. The extraordinary rate of human mutation from Type O to Type A was based on a survival response to the many infections caused by an increased populace and major dietary changes.

Type B blood developed around 10,000-15,000 B.C. in the area of the Himalayan highlands, which are now part of present-day Pakistan and India. It is presumed that Blood Type B may have initially mutated in response to climactic changes.

Type AB blood is the newest and rarest. It developed from the intermingling of Type A Caucasians and Type B Mongolians initially around 500 B.C.

The key data from the Blood Type Diet is avoiding foods that contain specific proteins called lectins, which cause blood cells to stick together like glue throughout the body at different organs and body systems. This is a great example of the old adage “One man’s food is another man’s poison” because some foods may be beneficial for some blood types since the lectins in them cause the cells to stay separate, while other foods can be harmful causing the cells to stick together. For example, gluten, the most common lectin found in wheat and other grains, binds to the lining of the small intestine, causing significant inflammation and painful irritation in some blood types—especially Type O.

I had attempted to follow very strictly in the past the Blood Type Diet from the reference book Eat Right 4 Your Type by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo, but found it to be too limiting especially since I am a Blood Type A. What I have found to work the best is to simply refer to the “Avoid” section for your blood type so that you eliminate any potentially troublesome foods. By combining this with the Paleo Diet approach, you have a more completely individualized dietary program.

It’s that time of year again! We’ve made it through the holidays and now it’s time to get our bodies back in shape again. This is the first in a series focusing on losing excess body fat.

Last year I noticed that some of my friends and patients had lost weight and looked fantastic. When they told me that they had done the HCG diet, I was at first a bit skeptical and also leery since I had learned in college that HCG, which stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin, is a hormone produced in the placenta of women in early pregnancy to stimulate the ovaries to produce other hormones to prevent menstruation and to ensure that the growing fetus has a constant and steady supply of energy and nutrients by mobilizing the reserves stored in the mother’s fatty tissues.

So naturally my first question was “What does a pregnancy hormone have to do with fat loss?” I was also curious about how men could benefit from this. I even joked with a male friend of mine while he was doing it that for Christmas I was going to get him a gift certificate for Victoria’s Secret!

During this time a friend of mine came to my office to do a post-HCG diet body composition analysis. She had done a body composition analysis exactly one year previous to this and wanted to see how much fat that she actually lost. She had gone from 137 pounds to 121 pounds losing a total of 16 pounds and looked great; however, what really impressed me the most was that of the 16 pounds that she lost, 15.5 pounds of it was fat!

That was the clincher for me. I realized that I had to bury my fixed idea about HCG and find out the complete truth about it. I spent the next couple months researching the HCG diet starting with Dr. A.T.W. Simeon’s manuscript called Pounds & Inches: A New Approach to Obesity, which was published in 1954. Dr. Simeon was a British medical doctor who was practicing in Rome, Italy when this landmark document was published.

Dr. Simeon’s approach is still used today as the foundation of the HCG protocol. It is composed of 2 parts:

1. The 500 calorie diet

2. HCG either administered through needle injection or oral homeopathic drops.

Because I am not a medical doctor and cannot prescribe, I am limited to recommending the oral homeopathic HCG drops. I was initially concerned that the homeopathic HCG drops were not as effective as the HCG injections, but after researching and surveying friends and patients I found that a majority did the homeopathic HCG drops with great success.

I also found out that current medical research shows that HCG is also produced by nearly all human tissues, male and female, pregnant or not. Plants and bacteria also produce HCG. I stopped teasing my male friend at this point!

The purpose of HCG when taken with this specific diet is to cause the natural release of abnormal fat deposits, reset your metabolism, and reset your hypothalamus gland, which is a very important gland in your brain that controls your hormonal system, nervous system, and sensation of hunger.

Along with the 500 calorie diet, HCG ensures that your body has a constant and steady supply of energy since it helps you to access on average about 1,500-2,000 of your own fat calories per day. This prevents you from feeling hungry, tired, weak, or irritable. If you were to eat just 500 calories without HCG, your body would think that you were starving which would actually cause your metabolism to slow down and to store any extra calories it can get because it doesn’t know when your next meal will come!

The next step was to find out which HCG homeopathic drops worked the best. I did a pilot study using a brand recommended by one of my supplement distributors and found that it did not work very well and the subjects had some uncomfortable side effects including headaches and extreme hunger. As a result, I did a thorough survey of those people that I knew who did very well on the homeopathic drops and tracked down the exact brand that worked the best..

Also, I was able to get a natural appetite suppressant, which contains no stimulants like caffeine, that works remarkably well and can be taken safely with no side effects.

In addition to the natural appetite suppressant, there are 3 other elements that make our HCG protocol truly unique.

1. I realized that a 500 calorie diet could not possibly deliver all the daily nutrients that a person needs for general health. As a result, I added in an incredible powdered supplement called Clinical Daily Prevention™, which is a whole food powdered supplement rich in berries and other fruit, greens, fibers, cleansing and stress-reducing herbs, probiotics, enzymes, and marine nutraceuticals.

2. Because you will be dumping on the average 1,500-2,000 calories of stored fat every day, it is important that all of your elimination channels are working properly ahead of time and that you successfully cleanse yourself before starting since body toxins have been shown to be stored in heavy concentrations in the body’s fatty tissues. With this in mind, I added a detoxification supplement that contains 20 different organic whole foods and botanicals to be taken intensively daily for one week before starting the diet.

3. Because some people work 14-20 hours a day and/or exercise strenously, a 500 calorie diet is simply not adequate. Therefore, on the days that either of these situations occur, an increased allowance of protein is recommend. In addition, a broader selection of fruits and vegetables is allowed. This approach is aptly named the Expanded HCG Diet.

The amount of time that you are on the diet depends on how much weight you are trying to lose. If you would like to lose up to 15 pounds, then the 26 day approach is recommended. If you are looking to lose 16-34 pounds, then the 43 day approach will do. If you need to lose more than 34 pounds, then you can do the 43 day approach, but will then have to wait 6 weeks to do another round. You can choose from either the Traditional or Vegetarian approaches.

The Nedd Health Center HCG Diet Protocol is composed of 4 Parts:

1. Part 1 – After initial consultation, then start 1 week cleanse with adequate water intake emphasized.

2. Part 2 – HCG diet begins. Start taking the drops on day 1 and continue ample water intake. After binging on fatty foods for 2 days, you start the 500 calorie diet on day 3 and receive a computerized body composition analysis along with tape measurements of targeted areas for weight loss. Continue taking the drops for the total agreed upon time (23 or 40 days) and then continue the 500 calorie diet for 72 hours after stopping drops. Another computerized body composition analysis & tape measurements will be performed on last day to document results.

3. Part 3 – The first part of the maintenance period in which you increase your calories up to approximately 1,500 per day, but continue to eliminate all foods containing sugar and starches. This is done for exactly 3 weeks..

4. Part 4 – The second part of the maintenance period in which you add back in sugar & starches, but in moderation. The Paleo Diet combined with the Blood Type Diet is recommended and will be covered in the next part of this series.

Whichever program you choose (26 or 43 days), you will receive a 25% discount if you pay for the whole program in full at the Clearwater office when starting instead of paying visit-by-visit. The program also includes weekly in-office consultations which give you the support that you need to be successful at this. You will be required to fill out Daily Progress Report Forms so that I can track your progress and troubleshoot any difficulties which may arise.

This program has already exceeded the expectations of a number of people that have implemented it. Plus they have successfully kept the weight off. Call us to make an appointment so that you can successfully slim down, too!

The next issue will cover another highly effective fat loss diet, but this one is a long-term approach based on time-tested correct eating guidelines resulting in more gradual fat loss.

Are Flat Feet a Big Deal?

I check everyone in their initial chiropractic exam for flat feet. The reason I do this is because it is easy to spot and can be remedied easily and inexpensively. Flat feet can result in some very painful conditions that you may not have realized have any connection whatsoever.

There are actually 2 types of flat feet: a flexible flat foot and a true fallen arch. A true fallen arch shows up as a flat foot whether you are standing, sitting, or trying to stand on your toes. In other words, no matter what you do or what position you put your foot in, it simply stays flat. A flexible flat foot, on the other hand, shows up as a flat foot when you stand on it, but when you stand on your heel or pull the toes back with the rest of the foot flat on the floor the arch will actually return. This is due to a condition called “excessive pronation” where the foot rolls inward.

In order to determine if you have flat feet, simple tests can be performed. As part of the initial postural analysis, I will have a patient remove his/her shoes and stand facing me with the feet about shoulder width apart. I then attempt to slide my index finger under the inside arch and see how far it will go. The flatter the arch, the shorter the distance I can get my finger under the arch. Another test that can be performed is the “wet footprint” test. You simply stand on a piece of cardboard or heavy paper on a smooth surface after wetting your feet with water. If you can see the entire outline of the foot, then that indicates you have a flat foot.

I have excessive pronation and suffered the consequences of this condition when I was a teenager. When I ran track I used to get painful shin splints (see #5 under flat foot problems) which required icing and massaging with cream on a daily basis. After discovering that I had excessive pronation, I got some custom-made orthotics (arch supports) which handled my flexible flat feet caused by excessive pronation. In addition, I received very specific chiropractic adjustments that reset the shin (tibia) bone since it tends to torque outward during excessive pronation. I have not had shin splints since I started wearing orthotics combined with chiropractic maintenance care!

There are 2 methods for recognizing excessive pronation:

1. The Achilles Tendon Test: On a normal foot when looking at the leg and foot from the back, the Achilles tendon runs straight down the leg into the heel. With excessive pronation, the tendon runs straight down the leg, but twists outward as it arrives at the heel. You inner ankle bone will jut out significantly compared to your outer ankle bone.

2. The Used Shoes Test: This is done by placing a pair of your most used running or dress shoes on the table with the toes pointing away from you. View them by squatting down to eye level and look to see if the shoes tilt inwards. If so, then your feet are excessively pronated. Also, excessive pronation will cause your shoes to have wear marks along the outer edge of the heel and inner edge of the toe areas.

When the inside arch of your foot flattens out it can create a domino effect of problems:

1. Bunion: A bump at the base of the big toe caused by extra bone or tissue growth. Because more weight is now centered over the big toe of your foot, you are more liable to develop an ugly and potentially painful bunion.

2. Plantar Fasciitis: A very painful condition in which the connective tissue on the underside of the foot called the “plantar fascia” becomes inflamed due to overstretching. The plantar fascia actually helps to form the arch since it stretches from underneath the sole and attaches at the heel. This condition is also commonly due to tight calf muscles.

3. Heel Spur: A hook of bone that forms on the bottom of the heel bone. It is related to plantar fasciitis since it occurs at the point where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone. It is the body’s way of trying to heal overstretched and inflamed connective tissue (including fascia) at that attachment point by gluing it together with calcium (bone).

4. Achilles Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendon that attaches the calf muscle to the heel.

5. Shin Splints: Pain or tenderness along or just behind the inner edge of the tibia, the large bone in the lower leg.

6. Knee Conditions: Knee pain can occur especially on the inner side of the knee since more weight is abnormally concentrated there with flat feet. This can lead to progressive degeneration of the cartilage including the meniscus which is a “c” shaped piece of cartilage that acts as a cushion in the knee joint.

7. Hip and Low Back Conditions: The hips and low back can compensate becoming tight and painful due to the imbalance of forces created by the flat feet.

Unless you have a severe case of rigid flat feet due to rheumatoid arthritis or rare developmental disorders causing the bones to fuse which ultimately may require surgery, most cases of flat feet can be treated conservatively with a high rate of success. Custom-made orthotics are normally the treatment of choice. We recommend the Powerstep Protech full length professional line of orthotics because of comfort, quality, reasonable pricing, and excellent track record. We have been using them for over 3 years and have yet to have a return! In addition to orthotics, a spinal and extremity analysis is performed including posture, muscle strength testing, and joint position. After this assessment, a tailored program is recommend which may include chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, stretching, and muscle strengthening, Your shoes may be analyzed to determine if they are the correct footwear for you, also.

If you suspect that you have flat feet or excessive pronation, then come in for an evaluation. If you need orthotics, we are offering them at 20% off for the remainder of the year. The usual price is $50 + tax, but they are discounted down to $40 + tax in November and December!

We offer progressive and state-of-the-art functional testing

The testing involves procedures that look for specific reasons why the body is not functioning at its optimum, as opposed to conventional testing approaches that are designed to attach a disease
name to your symptoms.

We begin with the standard Chiropractic, orthopedic, and neurological testing to check out your nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems. X-rays, MRI’s, bloodwork, and other high-tech diagnostics may also be requested from another location if needed.

Then, to even more accurately discover what is causing your symptoms or health condition, we use an advanced system of muscle testing known as Applied Kinesiology. This is used to detect any imbalances in the body so that an individualized program for you can be developed to correct these
imbalances and bring you closer to optimum body function and health.

Muscle testing also allows the doctor to recommend individualized nutritional supplement programs as opposed to traditional programs that are based on guess work or cookbook approaches.

Once the initial testing is done, we can then determine which of the following methods will be included in your treatment program to get the most effective results.

Natural Therapies

One thing that is very important for you to know and understand is that your body has a tremendous ability to heal itself as long as it:

1. Has the raw materials it needs to function properly or repair and rebuild itself, and

2. Is not being interfered with in its functions.

The therapies described below either address numbers 1 or 2 above or assist your body in accelerating its healing processes.

Chiropractic manipulative therapy (or a Chiropractic adjustment) is used to reduce or remove the misalignments
or improper movement of any joint in the body, but primarily in the spine. Spinal misalignments interfere with the body’s functioning (see #2 above) by altering the proper communication your nervous system is supposed to carry back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body.

Have you ever experienced problems with your Internet connection because of something not working right on the network? Then you know that until full communication (proper connection) is
established, you will not be able to browse the Internet well if at all. This may not be the best example to use but it at least shows how an interference in a communication system can lead to problems which are resolved when the interference is removed.

The Activator Methods technique, as shown in the picture above, is one of the most advanced and highly researched Chiropractic adjusting techniques and is very popular because it is a painless yet
very effective method for adjusting the spine or extremities. The Activator instrument (in use above) uses a very light force but it is delivered so quickly that the muscles do not have time to tense
up. Since the adjustment is faster than the muscles can react, there isn’t the need for the stronger force used in some other adjusting methods and so this technique can be used on anyone – from infants to seniors – without any hesitation.

Over 1,700 publications have shown that there have been no
recorded side effects for cold lasers. The specific laser that we use is made by Erchonia® and it emits a beam at the wavelength which is basically identical to the vibration rate of DNA replication in the human body.

In simple terms, it appears to encourage cell regeneration and repair; reduce pain, inflammation and swelling; and promote healing of damaged tissue.

Specific conditions that it is useful for include acute, chronic, or post-operative pain; arthritis; tendon/ligament/muscle disorders including sprains and strains; fractures; carpal tunnel syndrome; tennis elbow; scar tissue; nerve root irritations; back and neck problems; burns; intestinal disorders including ulcers, intestinal pain, and tumors; herpes lesions; and a variety of other skin conditions.

My mother had a chronic condition that caused the opening of her esophagus (the tube leading from the mouth to the stomach) to constrict where it went into the stomach. This would cause food to occasionally ‘stick’ at that point which was a very, very uncomfortable and frightening situation for her. She use to have to go to her M.D. twice a year for a procedure where they would stick glass tubes down her throat to “stretch” the opening so that she could swallow food normally. After I learned about Cold Laser Therapy I started to use it on my mother’s esophagus and after a period of treatment she was able to skip one of her ‘stretching’ procedures. In fact, rather than being able to only go for 6 months before having that procedure, she actually went for 2 years! And when the doctor did the procedure that time he said that the tissues they stretched were not as hard as they were previously and showed a lot of healing!

A good friend of mine broke his heel and had to have surgery on it due to the location and type of break. The day after the surgery, even though he was on heavy pain medication, he said that on a scale of 1-10 his pain was still an 8.5. I used the Cold Laser on his foot and by the
end of the next day he was off the pain medication and even without the medication his pain level was at a 1.5!

As described above, for your body to function well and be able to rebuild and repair itself it needs the proper raw materials. These come
from the air you breathe, the water you drink and the foods you eat.

Just as you need to have adequate levels and proper types of oil, gas or diesel and water for your car or truck to run properly, your body needs adequate amounts and proper types of water and nutrients to
function as it should.

But since the nutrient levels in many foods have been decreasing over the years due to changes in farming methods and how our sources of meat and dairy are raised, there is an increasing need to add in nutritional supplements just to provide your body with what it needs.

It was discovered as far back as the 1800s that a nutritional deficiency can cause health conditions. And in the 1900s it was also discovered that taking the wrong things into your body can cause it
to be toxic, which can also lead to health problems.

A nutritional evaluation is vital to ensuring your body has what it needs to be able to function at its optimum and repair and rebuild itself when trying to correct any health problem. We
recommend clinically-designed nutritional supplements, along with homeopathic remedies, and specific dietary approaches to restore balance and support optimal body function.

One advanced method of analysis we use is the Body Composition analysis. This high-tech method can give exact measurements of your body fat percentage, muscle mass, bone mass, water volume, water distribution, body mass index, metabolic rate, and overall cellular health. Did you know that your cells can be dehydrated even though you drink enough water or actually ‘retain fluid’? In certain circumstances you can have too much water outside the cells and not enough inside the cells and the Body Composition analysis is one of the only ways to be able to determine this. When this is discovered, the real reason for this problem can then be addressed.

This analysis is also the foundation for a Therapeutic Lifestyle Program called First Line Therapy which incorporates an individualized diet program, nutritional supplements, and exercise to attain optimum body composition and overall health.

“I’m very happy with the handlings done by Dr. Nedd on my knee. I’ve gone from being in pain, limping, swollen and generally somewhat miserable, to being perfectly OK. No pain, no limp, no adverse reactions. I can walk out of the doctor’s office knowing I don’t need to limp back in! What more can I ask? Thanks, Dr. Nedd.

“In a world where the only solutions to body injuries are either drugs or surgery, or just resigning oneself to the life of pain, Dr. Nedd offered not only hope, but confidence that he could help me. I had all but given up hope
of handling this life problem. Thank you Dr. Nedd for your healing skills and true help that allowed me to heal naturally. You are a
leader, successfully turning the tide in the healing arts to its original intent — a well and happy body.”

I like his simple but effective approaches to issues I’ve had with my skin and weight. Simply taking his advice on cutting back on sugar and dairy products, I saw immediate improvement. He doesn’t overwhelm me with so many vitamins like other doctors I’ve seen. He recommends only what you need to have, and it works. I had a couple of fibroids in my breast, and it was alarming. The cold laster therapy and changing my diet has been producing positive test results. My MD says they are shrinking and my ultrasounds show them getting smaller! This is very good news.”

“I want to highly commend and thank Dr. Nedd for the incredible, over-the-top assistance he has rendered since I broke my heel. He came on his ‘free time’ to the hospital, shortly after I had received foot surgery and worked on my ankle for about an hour. He even came out to the house each evening for about two weeks to give further laser treatments. His care has definitely speeded the healing process and decreased the expected recovery time, thus allowing me to return to work that much sooner. It should be noted that the hospital MD treating my foot recognized the increased speed of healing and commented on it. So Dr. Steve -

The Hidden Cause of Health Degeneration

Many of you may not fully understand how much of an effect spinal misalignments can have on your overall health. To help provide you this information here in a visual way that will make it easier to understand,
we have a 3D model of the spine you can access by clicking the “Click to View” button below left.

Interactive 3D Spine Simulator:
This new feature on our web site delivers a wealth of information on the spine. With this information alone, you will understand more about your body’s function and one of the main causes of the body’s malfunctioning that leads to health problems. Clicking on the link will launch a new window with the simulator. Here are instructions on how to use it:

A. Each vertebra in the spine, and the organs and nerves affected by misalignments of that vertebra The opening window will show health conditions in the affected areas that can result from spinal misalignments causing nerve interference or irritation. Click on each vertebra to see which locations of the body are affected with the nerves from that area.

B. The effects that spinal misalignments have over time on your spine Look toward the bottom of the screen and you’ll see 3 graphics next to each other. Click on the picture that is a side view of the lower spine. You’ll now be in the Subluxation window and there are 2 pages of information here (use the flashing purple arrow to switch between those 2 pages). Next, click on the Degeneration button on the left below the spinning man and there will be 12 pages of information on how spinal degeneration occurs as you age (again, use the flashing
purple arrow to move through the pages).

C. The effects of good and bad posture The information on good versus bad posture can be seen by clicking on the small graphic at the bottom of a back and side view of a body. There you’ll have 4 choices under “Postures” that will show you the correct versus incorrect positions for Driving or Sitting; proper positions for Sleeping; and normal posture from a side view and back view.

We use laser technology today to listen to our favorite music CDs, to watch Hi-Definition TV, to scan and print documents, and to measure distances, temperature and speed. There is also a lot of buzz about lasers in the healing arts, but what they actually are and how they really work remains a mystery to most of us.

Cold laser therapy, also known as Low Level laser therapy, is one of the safest and most effective physical medicine therapies that exists. Hot lasers emit heat which destroys tissue and are used primarily for surgical procedures of the eye, skin and abdomen. Cold lasers produce a healing effect with no heat. Cold lasers have been around for over 25 years and there has yet to be one recorded side effect.

Dr. Nedd uses the PL 5000 Erchonia™ Medical laser which is programmed at a base wavelength of 635 nanometers (one billionth of a meter). This exact wavelength was documented in Scientific American magazine in August 1997 to kill bacteria, accelerate wound healing and improve energy production, while at the same time neutralizing potentially harmful free radicals, which have been proven to cause cancer.

Research has shown that the cells of the body actually communicate with each other through the same type of light emitted by a laser known as coherent light. Different frequencies or pulsed vibrations of light can be programmed into this specific cold laser device to influence the healing of specific tissues resulting in rapid and superior healing, pain and inflammation reduction, and increased range of motion.

Specific conditions that it has been shown to help include acute, chronic or post-operative pain, tendonitis, tendon/ligament/muscle disorders including sprains, strains and weakness; fractures; carpal tunnel syndrome; tennis and golfer’s elbow; scar tissue; nerve root irritations; back and neck problems; cranial nerve disorders; intestinal disorders including ulcers, intestinal pain and tumors; burns; herpes lesions; and a variety of other skin conditions including the infamous flesh eating bacteria.

Recent success stories include helping 2 patients avoid surgery by helping heal torn knee tissues, plus helping a patient in a local hospital go off the heavy painkillers Morphine and Vicodin the day after a major surgery, and then able to go home the next day!

The average Cold Laser treatment takes anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, is painless and is very affordable. Contact our office to find out if you can benefit from this incredible technology. For more information, attend the workshop at Nature’s Food Patch on February 3, 2009.

Understanding Cholesterol – Part 3 of 4

Numerous scientific studies have shown that lowering cholesterol levels with medications can reduce heart disease risk. If this is true, then you would assume that people who lower their cholesterol levels will live longer in comparison to those who don’t. Isn’t the most important statistic of any study the mortality rate, which is who is alive at the end of the study? The American Heart Association cites 5 major clinical trials of cholesterol-lowering medication (statin) therapy that have been published since 2001 on their web site which supports their “conventional medicine-reduced cholesterol levels = reduced heart disease risk” hypothesis. Let’s look at the mortality rate of those 5 studies to see how valuable they really are.

Unfortunately none of these studies showed a dramatic decrease in the mortality of those who took a statin drug to lower their cholesterol levels. In four of the studies there was an average miniscule decline of less than 1% (0.775%) in mortality of those in the treated group versus the placebo group. The fifth study did not have a placebo or control group. Is it worth the cost and potential side effects – one of the studies showed that cancer was significantly increased in the treatment group – for such a slim improvement in one’s lifespan?

Statin drugs do have a slight benefit in preventing heart attacks, but some researchers are finding that this benefit is probably not from the ability of statins to reduce cholesterol levels, but possibly from their anti-inflammatory effect. If this is the case, there are much safer anti-inflammatory products as well as much safer and effective ways to lower your risk of heart attack which will be discussed in the next issue.

The Framingham study is arguably the most famous and one of the longest ongoing medical studies looking at heart disease. In 1987, after 30 years of follow up, researchers reported that there is no increased overall mortality in those studied with high cholesterol over 50 years of age. Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2002 in which 5,170 people took the statin drug Pravachol® versus 5,185 people treated with just lifestyle changes (diet, exercise) showed Pravachol to be superior at reducing cholesterol and ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol. The four year study made headlines for the cholesterol reduction. However, the more important ‘all cause’ mortality statistic, which is a measure of the number of people who died from any cause during the study, was not promoted because it was nearly equal in both groups. So now that we are seeing that high cholesterol levels basically have no effect on how long you live, let’s take a look at what problems can occur when cholesterol levels are lowered too much.

A study published in the European Heart Journal in 1997 involving 11,563 people found that people with cholesterol levels below 160 had a 49% increase in ‘all-cause’ mortality as compared to those people with cholesterol levels above 160. Non-cardiac deaths, the most frequent being cancer, increased by 2.27 times in the low cholesterol group compared to the control group.

The Framingham study also showed that the odds of cancer deaths were twice as high if a large fall in total cholesterol happened over any four year period.

Congestive heart failure has been rising sharply over the last 30 years. Between 1980 and 2006, hospitalizations for heart failure have increased by 230%. A study published in December of 2008 in the American Heart Journal looked at 17,791 hospitalized heart failure patients throughout the United States. The study looked at the correlation between total cholesterol levels and in-hospital mortality. The results were shocking to say the least. What they found was the higher the cholesterol levels, the lower the death rate! On the other hand, the lower the cholesterol levels, the higher the death rate! See the table below for the results:

Notice that statin drug use was also associated with more deaths in those studied. In other words, the higher the statin use, the higher the death rate. The lower the statin use, the lower the death rate. The authors concluded that, “Low cholesterol levels are associated with poor prognosis in patients hospitalized with heart failure.” Why didn’t this study make headlines on TV or in the newspapers?

Another study called the ENHANCE trial looked at the effects of the statin drug Zocor versus Vytorin, which is a combination of Zocor and the drug Zetia, which inhibits cholesterol absorption in the gut. The study targeted patients with hereditary high blood cholesterol and wanted to see if their cholesterol-lowering abilities resulted in less thickening of arterial walls, which is basically what atherosclerosis is. The total cholesterol levels, LDL levels, triglyceride levels, and C-reactive protein levels declined all both groups, but to a greater extent in the Vytorin group. However, the change in the thickness of the artery walls did not decline in either group, and actually increased in the people taking Vytorin! Big Pharma (the drug companies) delayed the reporting of this trial in order to maximize profits not only because of the unfavorable effects on artery wall thickness, but also because 30% of the people in the Zocor group had adverse effects while 34% of the people in the Vytorin group also had adverse effects. Once the results of this failed trial were announced, the market share for Vytorin began to decline after it peaked in 2007 at over $5 billion in sales.

Now that we have established that taking cholesterol-lowering drugs does not improve longevity and can be dangerous to your health, the next issue will look at some natural approaches to optimizing cholesterol levels and reducing your risk of heart attacks.

Recently a young man came to me with a neurological condition called Bell’s Palsy, also known as Facial Paralysis. The entire right side of his face was paralyzed, which as you can imagine created a tremendous amount of concern with him. He had already gone to a medical facility and spent $300 just on the recommended medication, which did absolutely nothing to correct or relieve his condition which began suddenly 10 days before visiting me.

Bell’s Palsy results when the Facial Nerve, also known as Cranial Nerve VII, becomes swollen, inflamed, or compressed resulting in temporary facial weakness or paralysis. The most common symptoms that are noticeable in addition to weakness or paralysis include twitching, drooping of the eyelid and corner of the mouth, drooling, dryness of the eye or mouth, impairment of taste, and excessive tearing in one eye. Most authorities believe that it could be caused by an inflammatory process, a herpes virus, trauma to the nerve from a skull fracture or facial injury, or possibly a tick bite (Lymes Disease).

Bell’s Palsy affects approximately 40,000 Americans annually and about 1 person in 65 during a lifetime. Diabetics are 4 times more likely to develop Bell’s Palsy than the general population. It also is found disproportionately in pregnant women and people with upper respiratory viral infections. Some famous people who have had Bell’s Palsy include actors George Clooney and Pierce Brosnan, film critic Roger Ebert, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, consumer advocate Ralph Nader, golfer Curtis Strange, and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

The prognosis for people with Bell’s Palsy is normally very good. Depending on the extent of nerve damage, improvement is gradual and your chances for a full recovery are better as long as your symptoms start to improve within 3 weeks of developing it. About 2 out of 3 people with Bell’s Palsy recover completely mostly in 3 to 6 months and some upwards of a year or more. The rest have ongoing weakness that ranges from partial to complete paralysis, which may never completely disappear.

Instead of hoping that he would not become one of those 33% that do not fully recover from Bell’s Palsy, my patient decided to do something about it and I assured him that I would do my best to assist him. A couple simple tests including inability to smile or squint on one side confirmed his condition. I then did a spinal and cranial analysis and found his right jaw and a bone in the back of his skull displaced, as well as the top vertebral segment in his neck. I then adjusted his neck, jaw, and cranial bone.

I then did a specific cold laser treatment to the Facial Nerve at the base of the skull and the right side of the face. I also prescribed for him the amino acid l-lysine for his immune system and Vitamin B6 to accelerate nerve healing. He returned 2 days later to receive a follow-up laser treatment and was very excited because he noticed return of movement to the right side of his face the day after his first treatment! Four days later he received another laser treatment and we could see less drooping of his mouth and eye plus he was very encouraged that he was able to give a speech that day without any trouble. Just 9 days after his first visit he returned for another laser treatment and remarked that he was 75% better! His mouth basically looked normal and his right eye was slightly more open than his left. At just under 2 weeks after we began care he was at 80% improvement and able to smile and squint without any noticeable difficulty!

This has been another example of helping someone not only get relief for his condition, but more importantly restoring normal function toward the ultimate goal of peak performance.

The next issue will include another interesting success story for you to enjoy!

New Procedure Can Melt Your Fat Away Safely Without Surgery!

I am very excited to introduce a new technology now available at our office. As you know, I use cold laser technology for various body conditions including pain, inflammation, weakness, muscle tension, and skin disorders. We now have a new cold laser called the Zerona™ which does the first non-invasive body contouring procedure to effectively remove excess fat.

The Zerona™ offers a non-surgical and non-drug alternative to other effective fat-removing procedures such as liposuction and mesoderm injections or creams. In fact, its predecessor the LipoLaser™ was used as a pre-operation aid to liposuction surgery making it easier for plastic and cosmetic surgeons to remove the fat since it was in a liquefied form as opposed to a solid form. Erchonia, the manufacturer of the Zerona™ and LipoLaser,™ actually got an FDA market clearance in 2004 for laser-assisted liposuction. The Zerona™ is in the process of receiving FDA market clearance for non-invasive body sculpting which is imminent in the very near future making it the first technology of its kind to achieve this status!

In case you’re wondering how this could possibly work, I would like to give you a simplified explanation of this process. Just under your skin you have stored fat called subcutaneous fat. Obviously some of us have much more than others. When the laser is shined on them, the membranes surrounding the fat cells open up and form pores allowing liquefied (emulsified) fat to escape. Then after a relatively short period of time, the membranes collapse and allow all of the emulsified fat to escape which is then available to be picked up by the body’s eliminative systems (lymph, blood, then intestines) where it can be safely and naturally removed. *See how this occurs in the electron microscope images below.

The advantages of Zerona™ over other more invasive approaches is that allows you to continue your normal daily activities without interruptions from surgery, pain, or wounds. Erchonia proved the safety and effectiveness of Zerona™ with a published study in which patients averaged a loss of 3.5 inches over a 2 week period after 6 treatments, with some losing as much as 9 inches compared to a placebo group that lost only a half an inch. As with any procedure results will vary and be more dramatic from one patient to the next.

This is not a quick weight loss program – we are targeting the fat tissue and are not taking off excess water weight. We are removing the excess fat to successfully shape the body for a more desirable outcome and appearance. Just remember that excess, unwanted subcutaneous fat not only affects appearance – it can affect your health – which is why we are now offering this service. In some cases, the excess fat can put additional strain on areas of your spine and in other cases it can put pressure on internal organs. You now have an alternative to a shapelier figure and healthier body without having to endure the fear and often painful process of a surgical procedure.

A Description of the Zerona™ Procedure

The first step of the Zerona™ procedure is determining whether or not you are a qualified candidate for it after filling out a health history form and receiving a consultation. If you are qualified, the 1-3 areas you would like to target for fat reduction are determined which may include your abdomen, hips, thighs, chest, arms, neck, and/or chin. In addition, we will determine whether you will do 6 treatments or 12 treatments.

You will receive an examination which will include tape measurements of the targeted body areas, your height and weight, and blood pressure if you have a history of high blood pressure. You will also receive a body composition analysis which will determine your body fat %, if your body is properly hydrated, and an exact reading of the rate of your metabolism. These tests will be re-run after every 3rd visit and at the end of your program. Pictures will also be taken for before and after comparisons.

Drinking plenty of water and taking specific nutritional supplements are also vital components of this program. The exact content of each will be determined during your initial visit and may be adjusted if necessary during your program. Getting some daily exercise and eating healthy is also highly recommend, but not mandatory during the course of your treatment.
On each visit you will lie down face up for 20 minutes and then face down for 20 minutes in comfortable clothing (preferably a bathing suit) while receiving the laser treatment. During this time you will not feel anything while relaxing comfortably since the laser being administered is a low level laser that does not produce heat. It is also recommended that you wear protective eyewear even though there have been no recorded side effects. We will also incorporate some simple to do steps before and after the laser treatment to stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage.

For more information on this exciting new procedure, please call our office for more details, go to www.zeronatampabay.com, and plan on attending one of our free workshops on Zerona™. You can also call our office to set up a free Zerona™ consultation so that you can have all of your questions answered and find out if you qualify to do this procedure.

Why does it seem that you can go from doctor to doctor trying to find a solution to your health problem without it ever really getting handled? In this and the next few newsletters I’m going to provide you with some valuable information to help you understand why this occurs and why the approach that I take with you is unique and can find those “hidden” solutions.

I’m going to start by first providing information to help you understand some things about how your body works that some doctors either don’t understand or choose to ignore, so that you can have more knowledge of what is needed to find real solutions to health problems. Then I’m going to cover a case history of a patient to help you see how this applies in the real world to people like you.

Since the most common problem that people seek chiropractic care for is back pain, I figured that we would start there since many of you can relate to this. Back pain can come from various sources including the spine being misaligned causing nerve irritation, muscle tension, muscle weakness, spinal disc disorders, poor posture, and referred pain coming from internal organs. Whether the pain started after an injury, sleeping wrong, lifting something heavy, sitting too long, eating something, or for no apparent reason, it is definitely not fun to have and can be life-changing to say the least.

Like many other health conditions, finding the cause of back pain can be a daunting task that only Sherlock Holmes would be able to handle! However, I enjoy this challenge and tailor my exams to seek and discover the true causes of back pain including those mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Here’s a case history of a patient with back pain that I was able to help recently. In accordance with privacy laws, the name of this patient has been kept confidential. This gentleman was in obvious distress as he walked into my office slowly with his right hand supporting his right lower back. His pain started a couple weeks before seeing me after he lifted a heavy object and gradually got worse until he could barely move the day before he first came in. The pain was worse when he would sit or stand.

When I examined him I noticed that his whole body was leaning to the left and forward because this allowed him to lean away from the pain. His lower back muscles were in spasm and bending to the right and backwards made the pain worse. He had several lower back and hip muscles that were weak when they were strength tested. He also incidentally had fallen arches in his feet.

Using the cold laser I was able to help restore nerve power and communication to the weak lower back muscles first. By strengthening weak muscles, tight muscles will automatically calm down because the main reason that they are tight in the first place is to compensate for the weak muscles to provide stability to the area. After that I stretched him on our traction table to further release the muscle tightness and begin to restore normal movement to the stuck lower back joints. I then delivered a gentle chiropractic adjustment to his lower back which freed his fixated back up even more.

He was given homework which included taking Epsom salt baths and supplementing with magnesium to reduce muscle tension, specific back stretches and exercises to strengthen the weak muscles, avoiding bending at the waist and instead squatting down to pick up or lift anything, ordering arch supports to handle his flat feet which may have contributed to his back problem, and utilizing a foam stress wedge for back support and to improve posture while sitting. He left feeling significantly better and was excited that he could take active responsibility in overcoming his condition. When he returned for his follow-up visit he was markedly improved and after 2 weeks of care he was pain-free and able to sit, stand and work with no difficulties or complaints!

How is the swine flu spread? It is thought to spread the same way that seasonal flus spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with this flu. People can also become infected by touching something like a surface or object that has flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth, nose or eyes. People with the swine flu may be able to infect others from one day before getting sick to 5-7 days after. This can be longer in some people, especially children and people with weakened immune systems.

What are the signs and symptoms of this virus in people? The most common symptoms of this flu virus include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A large number of people have also reported diarrhea and vomiting. The majority of people who have been sick have recovered without needing medical treatment. There have been some hospitalizations and deaths from this infection, but it has not been found to be any worse than recent seasonal flu outbreaks. Seasonal flu-related deaths in the U.S. average 36,000 with approximately 200,000 people hospitalized for flu-related complications. Over 90% of deaths and about 60% of hospitalizations occur in people older than 65. So far between mid-April and August 30, 2009, a total of 9,079 hospitalizations and 593 deaths associated with the swine flu have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The 2009-10 flu season officially begins October 4, 2009.

What preventive measures can I implement to protect myself? Just use common sense! For example, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and then throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because germs spread this way. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. If you are sick with flu-like symptoms, the CDC recommends that you stay home until at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or other necessities. Increase your daily intake of supplements that support your immune system including Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D3 (3,000 IU per day), fish oil, zinc, and flu homeopathic remedies like Oscillococcinum. Reduce dairy (milk and ice cream) and sugar intake which slow down the immune system.

What do I do if I suspect that I have the swine flu? Stay home and avoid contact with others until at least 24 hours after your fever is gone. You do not have to take fever-reducing medication. Instead, try increasing your calcium intake. According to Dr. Richard P. Murray in his book Basic Guide to UNDERSTANDING CLINICAL LABORATORY TESTS the reason that you have a fever in the first place is that your muscles are warming up your bones to release calcium which is needed to trigger your white blood cells to fight the infection! In children, emergency warning signs that require immediate medical attention include fast breathing or trouble breathing, bluish or gray skin color, not drinking enough fluids, severe or persistent vomiting, not waking up or interacting, being so irritable that the child refuses to be held, and flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and a worse cough. In adults, watch for difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness, confusion, severe or persistent vomiting, and flu-like symptoms improve but return with fever and worse cough.

Should I get the swine flu vaccine? There is a huge push to make the experimental swine flu vaccine available by the end of September 2009 with test groups reportedly only having 3 weeks of follow-up for side effects. Federal officials are recommending that Americans get 3 flu shots this fall; one regular flu shot and 2 doses of the swine flu vaccine. Regular flu shots have been found to be notoriously ineffective and many more people died from the swine flu vaccine in 1976 than from the actual virus. The best thing for you to do is to become more informed on this subject so that you can make the best decision for yourself and your family.
Recently I was able to successfully help a patient with exercise-induced asthma. She can now run sprints without having chest tightness, difficulty breathing or wheezing. Now many of you may be thinking “What could a chiropractor possibly do for asthma?” Actually I’ve successfully helped quite a few people with asthma during my career. After reading this you will understand why.

Asthma is a condition in which the airways of the lungs called the bronchi become narrowed due to inflammation and spasm making it difficult to breathe. Fortunately the inflammation of asthma is reversible unlike other lung disorders characterized by inflammation including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic bronchitis. It can be triggered by exercise, rapid temperature changes, various airborne allergens including dust mites, pollen, mold and animal dander, as well as food allergens such as milk, peanuts and eggs. Other environmental risk factors associated with the development of asthma particularly in children include exposure to cigarette smoke, childhood antibiotics, childhood vaccines, stress, poor hygiene, and being born via Caesarean section. Asthma affects approximately 7% of Americans and kills about 4,000 annually.

Asthma can exist as a steady chronic condition or as an acute asthma attack. Common symptoms of the steady-state include nighttime coughing, shortness of breath with exertion but not at rest, a chronic ‘throat-clear`ing’ type cough due to the excess mucus produced from the inflammation, and tightness in the chest. The primary symptoms of an asthma attack include shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness. Asthma medications are effective in preventing and treating asthma, but also have side effects, especially corticosteroid inhalers which can lead to increased body fat, increased appetite, increased blood sugar and weight gain when taken long-term, and osteoporosis when taken in high doses. Anyone who has been diagnosed with active asthma should carry an inhaler with them at all times just in case they experience an attack for obvious reasons.</>

Now let’s look at what else can be done about this reversible condition. The spinal nerves that control function of the lungs are found in the upper back just below the neck. If there is interference to these nerves, then the best the lungs will be able to function is 40%. Therefore, a chiropractic adjustment can improve lung function considerably when there is interference to the lung spinal nerves due to spinal misalignment.

Another part of the body that is associated with the lungs are the adrenal glands which are located on top of the kidneys. They produce hormones that regulate blood sugar, blood pressure, mineral balance, your body’s ability to handle stress, and breathing. They are the body’s primary stress glands. When they malfunction some of the symptoms and triggers of asthma can occur including allergies, inflammation, exercise intolerance, and difficulty breathing. The adrenal glands produce corticosteroid hormones which happen to be the active ingredient in inhalers. I have found that improving adrenal function through chiropractic adjustments, nutritional supplements, cold laser therapy, getting plenty of sleep and stress reduction has worked incredibly well in treating and in some cases eliminating asthma.

Allergy desensitization is also very helpful in combating asthma. By balancing the major systems of the body while being exposed to the allergen, future exposures will not be as harsh. This technique is based on Dr. Nambudripod’s NAET (Nambudripod Allergy Elimination Technique) which can eliminate food and airborne allergens.

Vitamin C has been shown to improve lung function in asthmatics according to some published studies. Natural anti-inflammatories like Omega 3 fish oil (EPA/DHA) as well as enzymes taken on an empty stomach are also helpful. Reduction of mucus-forming foods like milk, ice cream and sugar are also recommended. Drinking lots of water is also critical to keep the lung membranes moist.

One final gem I would like to share with you is the mineral magnesium. Due to global soil deficiency, most of us are magnesium-deficient. Magnesium relaxes muscles, dilates blood vessels, helps with intestinal elimination, and keeps calcium from binding up in blood vessels (arteriosclerosis), joints (osteoarthritis) and the kidneys (kidney stones). Another important function of magnesium that is not well known even amongst doctors is that it dilates the lung bronchi. A deficiency of magnesium can lead to constricted lung bronchi which is the hallmark of asthma. In my experience, by getting patients with asthma to supplement with a highly absorbable form of magnesium, their breathing difficulties normally improve dramatically and stay improved!

Recently a patient came in complaining of headaches which were located near his right temple, behind his right eye and near the base of the right side of his head down to his right neck/shoulder region They troubled him for over 3 days and nothing including painkillers got rid of them. He incidentally also was experiencing some digestive problems including heartburn and nausea especially when eating greasy fried foods and when drinking alcohol. Upon further inspection I was able to make a connection right away as far as what was causing his headaches and digestive disturbance.

There are many types of headaches and seemingly infinite causes for all of them. Sometimes I feel like Sherlock Holmes when it comes to determining what is behind some headaches since they can be due to multiple and even obscure factors. The most common type of headache that I see in practice is a tension headache. This is due to tight muscles in the base of the head and back of the neck which can refer pain from the base of the head around to the eyes. These are relieved by chiropractic adjustments to the upper neck which remove the interference to the nerves and blood vessels that wrap around to the front of the head as well as relax the surrounding muscles. Massage, light traction, and extra magnesium also assist in calming down these tight muscles so that the adjustment will stabilize better. One of the reasons this patient was having headaches was because he had a vertebra out of alignment in his upper right neck. However, it wasn’t the only reason he was having headaches.

His digestive symptoms prompted me to probe a little more and what I found was quite a revelation to him. I pushed inward around the inside angle of his front right lower rib cage and he admitted that it was very tender. I also pushed inward along the inside part of his right shoulder blade, behind his right knee, and a spot on the front of his right arm a few inches down from his shoulder joint and all of these points were very tender, too! The suspense was really getting to him about the significance of these areas so I finally told him that all of these areas are places where a malfunctioning gallbladder tends to refer pain. Not only that, but the gallbladder can also cause headaches which go from the base of the head around to the eye, particularly on the right side! He was pretty amazed and felt much better knowing what was behind his headaches.

He felt even better after receiving his neck and back adjustment, special diet, and the nutritional supplement called A-F Betafood, which is primarily organic raw beets and carrots for improving gallbladder function. In fact, he woke up the next day and his headaches were completely gone! They did not return for over a month when he got off his diet and supplements too soon. As soon as he received an adjustment and renewed his program his headaches disappeared again and have not returned since! The next step is to do a gallbladder flush which helps to rid the liver and gallbladder of cholesterol and bile deposits.

This just goes to show you that some health conditions do not have one simple cause to them. Next issue will demonstrate that nicely. It is the greatest success story of my career and the final installment of the “Finding Hidden Health Solutions” series!

We have now come to the final edition of this series and I’ve saved the best for last! This particular case is very dear to me not only because is it the most remarkable success story of my career, but it also happens to be my mom!

My mom, Francesca Nedd, was officially diagnosed with scleroderma in 1984 at the original Cleveland Clinic. She was given 5 years to live with no cure and was recommended to move to a warmer climate. As a result, my parents and I moved to Cape Coral (Florida) later that year where I began my undergrad studies at Edison Community College and continued to Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis where I received my Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Chiropractic degrees in 1989. That was about the time that she was supposed to succumb to this deadly disease, but something else entirely happened!

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease of the body’s connective tissue. An autoimmune disease is an illness that occurs when the body’s tissues are attacked by the body’s own immune system. The parts of the body that are affected by scleroderma are the skin (derma) and organs which develop scar tissue (fibrosis) and can then later become thickened and hardened due to calcium deposits (sclerosis). The acronym CREST describes body conditions that scleroderma causes: Calcinosis is the formation of tiny deposits of calcium in the skin. Raynaud’s phenomenon refers to spasms of the tiny blood vessels supplying the fingers, toes, nose, tongue and/or ears resulting in these areas turning blue, white and then red after exposure to cold temperatures. Esophagus disease results due to poor functioning of the muscle of the lower 2/3 of the esophagus with associated heartburn, acid reflux, ulcer formation and scarring. Sclerodactyly refers to localized thickening and tightness of the skin of the fingers and toes resulting in a shiny and puffy appearance with severe limitation of motion. Telangiectasias are dilated capillaries that blanch when they are pressed upon and appear as tiny red areas usually on the face, hands and in the mouth behind the lips.

When I began working with Francesca we had several factors working against us including the fact that there was and still is no known cause or cure for scleroderma, and it was already 5 years since the doctor diagnosed her. Despite all of that, Francesca was determined to fight and do whatever it took to survive and overcome this disease. She had already been receiving regular chiropractic adjustments and so we continued that successful action. Her diet was very good and it was tailored to her difficulty swallowing due to her narrowed esophagus. She was already on a large number of nutritional supplements, but I was able to personalize it so that it was far more precise than what she was taking previously.

In particular, two supplements appeared to make the biggest impact. The first was whole leaf aloe vera juice meaning not just the gel of the aloe plant, but also the leaf is included in the formula. Aloe vera is not only excellent for sunburn, which is essentially inflammation of the skin due to sun exposure, but also any inflammation inside the body when consumed. It helped to heal the lining of her stomach and esophagus which was riddled with scar tissue and ulcers as well as other areas of the body where calcium would accumulate. The idea was that if you could reduce the inflammation, less scar tissue and calcium build-up would follow. This is precisely what happened as you will see later in this article.

The other supplement that made the biggest impact was magnesium. It’s a known fact that calcium can build-up in the body’s tissues if the body doesn’t have enough magnesium to keep it in balance. Francesca had kidney stones when she was younger and handled them with large doses of magnesium. When we increased her magnesium intake we noticed that her skin softened up and she had fewer and less frequent calcium deposits throughout her body.

Another successful action that Francesca completed was a sweat detoxification program called the Purification Rundown® based on the book Clear Body Clear Mind by L. Ron Hubbard. It involved daily exercise of about 1/2 hour followed by sweating in a sauna for up to 4 1/2 hours to eliminate radiation as well as toxins from drugs, industrial chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, food preservatives and other sources that accumulate over one’s lifetime lodging in the fatty tissues of the body. Francesca traced her scleroderma-related conditions back to 1962 when she began having recurrent attacks of bronchitis, pneumonia, laryngitis, weight loss, and extreme stomach pains. At that time she was already well into her career as a hairdresser and worked with chemicals and dyes often without using gloves or masks up to the time that she was diagnosed in 1984. She felt like a new woman after detoxifying a lifetime worth of medication residues, chemical exposure, and sun radiation amongst other things!

Another remarkable technology that helped Francesca was the cold laser. Because of the acid reflux that she experienced on a regular basis, her esophagus took quite a beating and the scar tissue build-up was so severe that she would get to a point where food would get stuck and not reach the stomach. She then would have to go to her gastroenterologist on average about every 4-6 months and have tubes put down her throat and esophagus to open up the narrowed passage so that she could eat again. This went on for years until we started to use the cold laser along with whole leaf aloe on a regular basis. I went with her for her procedure each time and was allowed to be in the room during the surgery being able to see the inside of her esophagus. Normally there was a great deal of scar tissue and ulcers at the bottom of the esophagus, but after using the cold laser on a daily basis she didn’t have to return for 2 years and the tissue was normal with no sign of scarring or ulcers! The doctor was so impressed that he started referring me patients after that!

Francesca did quite well until early 2005 when she came down with double pneumonia and eventually congestive heart failure. She continued to fight, but her body was weakened not only from these conditions, but also an intestinal infection that she picked up in the hospital or nursing home. She passed away on September 26, 2005, which was over 21 years instead of the 5 years she was given. During that time, she was my assistant and office manager for 15 years and an incredible inspiration to patients with challenging and so-called “incurable” conditions that we were able to help in part due to her urging them to fight and not give up.
